a social media platform is 'labeling users as antifa members' - what's really going on?

Days after Donald Trump labelled Antifa as a domestic terrorist organisation,eagle-eyed social media users have spotted something amiss.

On Threads,a social media platform owned by Meta, which also operates Facebook,Instagram and WhatsApp,a warning label about users being ‘associated’ with Antifa has appeared.

Simple posts, including one seen by Metro, reading,‘I am drinking a matcha in midtown Manhattan! Let’s go!!!’ has now been accompanied by a confusing label.

Below the normal post is a message reading ‘This user is suspected of being part of a terrorist organisation called Antifa. Please report any suspicious behaviour.’

A Meta spokesperson told Lifehacker in a statement that the label was ‘just a meme’ and not created by Meta, but the labels have still sparked confusion.

The worrying trend sees users put a formatted message about Antifa below their post, making it appear as though Meta,Threads’ parent company, added it.

Metro has contacted Meta for further information on the matter.

Antifa – short for anti-fascist – is a left-wing,anti-fascist,political activist movement that comprises activist groups, who aim to achieve their political objectives through direct action as opposed to policy reform.

The group have made their presence known at protests around the US,notably at the Charlottesville alt-right protests centred around the Unite The Right Rally in 2017.

Individuals involved in the movement tend to hold anti-capitalist views, and subscribe to such ideologies as communism, socialism and Marxism.

They are known to go a step further than liberal anti-racists by seeking out organised fascist events and trying to shut them down.

They are known to use various protest tactics such as digital activism and harassment against those they identify as fascist, racist,or having far-right beliefs.

Trump has claimed the organisation is linked to the group’s ‘terrorist actions’,but it’s a bit more complicated than that.
