Hualien, Taiwan: The Best Choice for Low-Carbon Tourism

2026-08-26

- Look Up to Gaze at the Stars and Moon; Look Down for an Even More Exciting Cycling Experience

With its pristine night sky and diverse terrain, Hualien, Taiwan, is one of the few low-carbon tourism destinations in Taiwan that offer the dual appeal of “stargazing and moon-gazing at night, and cycling by day.” In recent years, the Hualien County Government has continuously promoted sustainable tourism. Among its most representative summer astronomy tourism brands is the “Meteor Hualien” series of events, which will reach its climax on August 15 with the “Starlight Concert”! Combining a night sky with minimal light pollution, an immersive musical experience, and sustainable slow travel, this event allows visitors to Hualien to experience the most romantic low-carbon summer nights.

Since 2020, the “Meteor Hualien” series has evolved from a single event into a comprehensive brand encompassing stargazing, ecology, crafts, and music, becoming one of the most iconic summer astronomy tourism events. The “Starlight Concert” is the brand’s most representative and defining element. Beaches, lawns, and forests take turns serving as natural concert venues. As audiences enjoy live performances while gazing up at a sky full of stars—accompanied by stargazing tours, DIY workshops, and local market cuisine—the event has evolved into one of Hualien’s most iconic summer night tourism brands.

In addition to the nighttime stargazing extravaganza, Hualien also encourages visitors to explore the area by bicycle, extending low-carbon exploration into the daytime. The ongoing “2026 Hualien Ride Journal” connects five iconic cycling routes within the county, covering the Pacific Coast, lakes and ponds, wetland ecosystems, and the pastoral landscapes of the Longitudinal Valley. Whether you’re traveling with children, as a couple, or as a senior, you can savor Hualien’s mountain and sea scenery at a leisurely, zero-emission pace.

Magistrate of Hualien County Hsu Chen-wei stated that Hualien, with its low-light-pollution pristine night skies and bicycle-friendly environment, is an ideal destination for developing low-carbon tourism. The county government hopes that through nature-immersive travel, visitors can slow down, step into the natural world, and truly integrate the concept of sustainable tourism into every journey.

Director of the Tourism Department Yu Ming-hsun noted that whether stargazing or cycling, both are concrete practices of low-carbon tourism in Hualien. In the future, the county government will continue to combine ecology with local culture, launching more low-carbon tour itineraries that balance nature conservation with in-depth experiences, showcasing the unique charm of Hualien’s sustainable tourism. From the vast starry skies to the winding mountains and seas, Hualien persistently offers diverse and eco-friendly ways to create travel experiences that are both profound and heartfelt. The Hualien County Government sincerely invites travelers from around the world to seize the summer season—gaze at the stars with your own eyes, explore the mountains and seas on two wheels, and experience Hualien’s distinctive allure firsthand. It is also hoped that through these events, Hualien’s natural beauty and sustainable tourism philosophy will be seen and appreciated by more domestic and international visitors.
